Ladies Mile has been a feature of Southsea Common since the 1920's when Portsmouth Corporation purchased the common from the War Department. It originally extended all the way to Pier Road and was lined on each side by a fine avenue of Elm trees. Changes in road layout and Dutch Elm disease have had a significant impact on the feature.
