Inscription (Upper Plaque)
KING JAMES QUAY OLD PORTSMOUTH 1995-1997
Inscription (Lower Plaque)
KING JAMES GATE MONOGRAM THERE WERE TWO SUCH MONOGRAMS ON THIS SITE ONE ON EACH FACE OF THE ORIGINAL CAMBER BASTION
Further Information
The two monograms had been stored in the Round Tower on Broad Street for many years. The developers of King James Quay were asked to display them both, but upon examination one was found to be in such poor condition it was not in fact raised. The date on the monogram tells us it refers to King James II.
See the page on the King James Gate itself.
