HMS Sultan was an ironclad battleship launched on the 31st May 1870. The photo of the ship taken by photographers Symonds & Co. of 39 High Street, Portsmouth must have been taken in that year before the funnels were added.
The shore base, HMS Sultan was commissioned on 1 June 1956 as a Mechanical Training and Repair Establishment (MT & RE). It is not known exactly when the anchor was removed from Victoria Park.
