Further Information
We have now almost finished our initial survey of the churches above. This has been largely concerned with recording the memorials that have a military connection, but has also included civilian plaques where there is a strong element of local history involved. We shall now be re-visiting all of the churches in order to record the memorials missed first time round. Should anyone wish to help us with this process please go to the Contact page and send us an e-mail.
In addition we will be seeking information about memorials lost when churches were destroyed or changed usage. We are particularly interested in St. Paul's and St Bartholomew's (both Southsea), St John's (Portsea) and St Barbara's (Hilsea).
This search for lost memorials was recently given a kick-start by the receipt of an e-mail from Mark Stephens who tells us that his great-grandfather, Captain Prescot William Stephens, who was captain of HMS Thetis and died at sea in 1882, was remembered on a memorial erected in the Circus Church. Shortly after this Peter Rogers provided evidence of a Circus Church Roll of Honour and we therefore decided to launch a 'Lost Church Memorial' section with a page on the Circus Church.
